National University of Singapore (NUS)

In September 1904, Tan Jiak Kim drove a gathering of delegates of the Chinese and other non-European groups, and requested of the Governor of the Straits Settlements, Sir John Anderson, to create a restorative school in Singapore.Tan, who was the first leader of the Straits Chinese British Association, figured out how to raise 87,077 Straits dollars, of which the biggest measure of $12,000 originated from himself.[citation needed] On 3 July 1905, the therapeutic school was authorized, and was known as the Straits Settlements and Federated Malay States Government Medical School. 

In 1912, the therapeutic school got an enrichment of $120,000 from the King Edward VII Memorial Fund, began by Lim Boon Keng. Accordingly on 18 November 1913, the label of the school was changed to the King Edward VII Medical School. In 1921, it was again adjusted to the King Edward VII College of Medicine to mirror its scholarly status.
